There are 35 locks along the canal path. You may be thinking, "What's a lock? Why did they build them?" There's a lot to learn. Crosswater's Immersive Experiences can improve the knowledge retention of these lessons.

The 363-mile man-made waterway, built between 1817-1825, was the most ambitious civil engineering project of its time. It connected the Hudson River to Lake Erie, providing the first navigable waterway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Lakes. This "Marriage of the Waters," as it was called at the time, established New York as a powerful and innovative state.

The canal provided a new, efficient way for goods to be shipped to Upstate NY and the Great Lakes region. It fostered and enabled a new period of economic and societal growth, which played a key role in shaping the vibrant culture that exists in the region today.
